Anemone Series

This is a small group of photos taken while in the process of painting.  For the past few years I have focused my work on teaching and creating Suminagashi, an ancient Japanese marbling technique.  While floating ink on the surface of water you create unique shapes and then print them on paper.

These process images came about one day when my kids were playing with a gooey Oobleck mixture of water & cornstarch.  I wondered what would happen if I placed ink onto this fluid surface.  So I tapped the surface with my brush as I would when marbling,  and the ink came to life, pooling together and sprouting into these spontaneous shapes.  I wasn’t able to capture them on paper but  it seemed appropriate because the most enjoyable part was the experience in the moment.

My muse has always leaned toward the sea so I tend to see it in my work. In this particular series I see a diverse group of sea anemone but I love how these different biomorphic shapes can allude to other life forms related to the viewers inspirations and experience.
